NEWSBRIEF
----------------------------------------

\- Hello Citizens.

\- On Friday, January 20th, 2006, we will venture forth from our respective abodes, shake off the rainshine, and ensemble at our favorite local watering hole, Ballard's Finest, the SUNSET TAVERN. What could possibly be the cause of such a calamity, you ask? Well, it appears that fan du millÚnaire HEATHER HYDRA is having herself a bit of a birthday. So be sure to come early and be certain to bring a card for the birfday grrl. And as always, in case you're wondering why you should /really/ show up, joining us to celebrate are some excellent local acts. Our musical cousin KARL BLAU will bring his folk-rockin' self down from Anacortes, RAT CAT HOGAN will be celebrating the release of their brand new album, and Sir JOHN RODERICK will be proving what he did to deserve his recent knighthood.

\- Saturday, April 30th, 2005, Thee Hydrae disgraced the stage of the VERA PROJECT for a set of oldies but stalies. In response to a Freedom of Information Act request, we zipped up the resulting MP3s and made them AVAILABLE (50MB download) for your derisive displeasure. Please direct your tomatoes and eggs to ANTON, who followed through on his threat to unleash us on the denizens of Seaville unless the City Council cave to his proposal to have a new sports arena built.

If 50MB is a bit too spicy for your downloading tastes, you can sample the evening by listening to the performance of our classic OXYGEN = DEATH. If it pleases you, please order from the main menu above.

\- We are incredibly proud to declare the unveiling of THE PEEFS, inwhich you will find 10 original songs, five literary references, and only several rifted liffs. It was a long time a-comin'; recording time spanned three calendar years and no less than five "waiting for walla to return from tour" periods.

\- THE PEEFS is available currently from SKROCKI RECORDS, but before you start throwing ten dollar bills at Sir Skrocki, please consider encouraging your local indierock boutique to order some from our trusty DISTRIBUTOR, Revolver USA.

THE PEEFS CD
----------------------------------------

Released: 2004.
Label: SKROCKI.
Artwork: Ryin Kobza
Tracks: 01. William Wizard Cauliflower. \ 02. Binary Thoughts. { LISTEN } \ 03. Space Movie. \ 04. Misfortune. { LISTEN } \ 05. Professor (Pt. 2). \ 06. The More I See. \ 07. The PEEFs. \ 08. Frenchies. { LISTEN } \ 09. Moon Bass Dover. \ 10. Pillows Get To Sleep All Day.

\- The PEEFs is the long-awaited fruit of a procrastinated labor. We started recording in the Fall of 2002 right about the time that KNOCKOUT was released, and didn't complete it until the Spring of 2003. The reasons are various: Chris was on tour and booked at the studio through much of the time; Joe became very ill; the band was not playing out much; time flew. But it's completed now, and it's our absolute most favorite record to date.

\- The idea for the title came about during recording when Chris, while trying to maintain his hip, MTV vernacular, asked Robbie about his "peeps." Robbie responded in horror, "My Peefs? What Peefs??" to which Jay opined: "Say, that would make a great album title." And there you have it. Jay expounded on the idea by making it an acronym (Pilot Engineer Expeditionary Force, I think), and developed an entire backstory of a Lunar war that may seem familiar to WWII buffs. The PEEFs make several appearances on the record, but in truth there is really no story to be told. Just developed.

KNOCKOUT TO DISPENSE CD
----------------------------------------

Released: 2002.
Label: ELSINOR.
Artwork: Brian Willett
Tracks: 01. Buzz Cut. \ 02. Remember Little Satan. \ 03. In the Movies. { LISTEN } \ 04. That Swingin' Rubicon. \ 05. No. 263 in Norway. \ 06. The Estuary. \ 07. Light From Christmas Strands. { LISTEN } \ 08. You Wanna Get Lost? \ 09. Kings Need Crowns To Be a King. \ 10. The World Would Be Lost Without Raincoats.

\- Knockout was the first record that we did with Chris at the newly-inherited HALL OF JUSTICE. It was the summer of 2001 and we booked an entire week in the studio. Every morning someone stopped at the bagel shop for breakfast and coffee, and we convened to record in the most "official" style since the band's inception. Chris had really outdone himself with this legendary studio (previous owners Jon & Stu in turn took over from the days when it was known as Reciprocal and was used for early Nirvana, et al), and we feel honored to be one of the first projects he did there. We felt as if we were visiting some Museum of Indierock History, and were impressed with the master tapes of some of our indie rock idols: Low, Blonde Redhead, Unwound, Sleater-Kinney. That energy helped us form Knockout, as most of it was written in studio. Nathan flew up from California to offer help with drums, and he and Robbie perform on almost every song (Nathan took care of "Kings Need Crowns" and totally laid down one of the best drum performances ever in just one take). Allisyn was on hand for some great vocal interplay and augmentation. Overall, this was one of the most enjoyable weeks in Hydra history. There's a certain feeling of being in the studio, of being creative- almost like you're on vacation. Which is probably why Chris has invested in a huge stock of Bermuda shorts and suntan lotion.

AIRPORT TRANSIT GUIDE 7-inch
----------------------------------------

Released: 2002.
Label: MONTESANO.
Artwork: Ryin Kobza
Tracks: 01. Airport Transit Guide. \ 02. Snowbound the Blue Flowers.

\- These two songs were recorded in two days at the HALL OF JUSTICE in January of 2001, just a month after we released The Antiphony. The songs were interesting to us- more accelerated, more syncopated, than previous Hydra recordings. The idea of a single, or at least one lone song on one side of vinyl, is appealing in that manner. With an album, you have to think about patterns and momentum and mood; on a single you pack all that into one song and let it fuck-all hang loose. And we did. Allisyn starts off "Snowbound" with a gorgeous melody, and it transforms into a breakable dance number with Chris playing the most wicked piano- like a funereal vamp that slaps the other melodies around with contempt. The lofty pop and stringed out ending to "Airport" was our attempt to create a motional build up worthy of North of America or the Burning Softies. For the artwork, we relied once again on RYIN, who crafted a sublime single color design for us.

THE ANTIPHONY CD
----------------------------------------

Released: 2001.
Label: ELSINOR.
Artwork: Ryin Kobza
Tracks: 01. There Is a Certain Shift. { LISTEN } \ 02. Great Mumping Villains. \ 03. If You’re Looking For Gloucester. \ 04. Foreign Academies. \ 05. The Antiphony. \ 06. Crazy Mike’s Video. \ 07. Freemasons: Shinplaster or Shinsplints. \ 08. Copilots of the LCD Scene. \ 09. Inchoate Goes the Snow Route. { LISTEN } \ 10. Phalanx. \ 11. Semaphore Should Be Sufficient. \ 12. Astoria Larking. \ 13. Egg Toss Frequency. \ 14. Dunkirk. \ 15. Bunny Parade. \ 16. Pinball Blizzard. \ 17. Where We Intersect Is Collide.

\- Because of the call and response nature of the songs, with just Joe and Jay writing, it has proven appropriate that we titled this album The Antiphony. We recorded this in the interim space where Chris had set up his mobile recording lab. It was in a converted karate-class garage type of thing in Wallingford, with the sketchiest back-alley parking and concrete steps. Tracking was done one at a time for the most part, so there wasn't much collaboration besides the Walla + Hydra member factor. Nathan, of course, ripped through the drum tracks with adeptness, and then we pieced everything together one portion at a time. One of the recording highlights was watching Ben overdub a 5 second drum track to end off the song "Pinball Blizzard." It was such a small portion of tape, but took about 50 takes to get it all together, and let me tell you, there's nothing like watching the charmingly impatient Mr. Gibbard repeatedly play an enthusiastic 5-second drum performance. Classic.

THE SWISS ADMIRAL CD-EP
----------------------------------------

Released: 2001.
Label: Burnout.
Artwork: Ryin Kobza
Tracks: 01. World's Phair. \ 02. Into Yr Thumb. \ 03. Multitrack Recording. \ 04. Bomb Squad. \ 05. 20,000 Softball Leagues Under the Sea.

\- Jay, Joe, Bart, Ben, and Allisyn drove down to Olympia's Dub Narcotic studios for a full weekend of recording with our friend Phil Elvrum. We spent the night in the gymnasium-like studio, sacked out on the floor or on the couch in sleeping bags. We took Phil out to breakfast on the second day and he gleefully ordered some good old fashioned country S.O.S. When the plate arrived, Ben just stared at it and eventually said, "What the hell is that?" (Ben, as a very disciplined vegan, had a hard time finding good food for himself and practically lived on Goober Grape and bagels the whole weekend). Phil shrugged his shoulders and smiled, one of his trademark qualities. There were many memorable moments: Ben playing the swing drum intro for 20,000 Leagues; recording a skateboard rolling by the microphone; Bart doing about 8 million vocal takes for Bomb Squad; Phil playing the broken-machinery sounding guitar part in Into Yr Thumb. Dub Narcotic is an indie-rocker's dream come true, definitely one of the coolest places you could ever hope to record in. During mixing, one of the studio's monitors fell over and broke, and we felt so chastened (we were there for free, remember) but Calvin was very considerate about it.

\- The title "Swiss Admiral" comes from a book by Raymond Queneau called The Bark Tree, where one character says of another character, "You're about as useful as a Swiss Admiral!"

QUEEN OF THE GRAVITY URGE 7-inch
----------------------------------------

Released: 2000.
Label BARSUK.
Artwork: Ryin Kobza
Tracks: 01. Queen of the Gravity Urge. { LISTEN } \ 02. Tranquility Bass.

\- Recorded on Brian Willett’s computer in his basement studio The Rec Room. Queen was a modernization of a song from the LEFT-HANDED SCISSORS INCIDENT, while Tranquility Bass remains Robbie's all-time favorite Hydra song to play live (well, only because we won't play Cocksucker's Blues). Once again, RYIN outdid himself with the artwork, giving a dive-bomb effect to encapsulate the very urge that title refers to. The inserts also include the actual airmail envelopes with letters from the "War Front", which were printed at Thingmakers.

RATCHETING DOWN THE MELANCHOLIC AFTERBEAT; A NOVEL CD
----------------------------------------

Released: 1999.
Label: ELSINOR.
Artwork: Jay
Tracks: 01. The Book (a PDF file of a novel). \ 02. Der Blau Reiter. \ 03. Befuddled Opener. \ 04. Fake As the Scenery. { LISTEN } \ 05. Refers To Cocksucker’s Blues. \ 06. Professor 2nd Guess. \ 07. Good News For the Warm Blooded. { LISTEN } \ 08. Oxygen = Death. \ 09. Self-Indulgent Birthday Party. \ 10. Screen Door. \ 11. Surpreyes. \ 12. History of Art. \ 13. Powerful Polarities. \ 14. Shakespeare’s Fingernails. \ 15. Hats & Scarves. \ 16. Oatmeal, Son of Sopebocks. \ 17. Forecast. \ 18. Obnoxia Baba. \ 19. Charlie Lindbergh.

\- The transitional album from cassette to CD, Ratcheting consisted of lots of archived songs as well as some new ones. It was tough to record, since Jay had recently moved to Seattle while we remained behind in Bellingham. Chris Walla stepped up to the challenge, however, and recorded most of it in the infamous Ellis St. House-era HALL OF JUSTICE, running snake cables downstairs through a heating vent, along the kitchen ceiling, and down a flight of stairs. After tracking was done, nobody knew what to do next, so we just sat on it for a while. Finally, Ben decided to mix it himself and completed it in a long afternoon.

\- Included with the album is a copy of Jay's novel of the same name, which is a wonderful Pynchonesque love story for the unemployed. Definitely worth a read.

HISS INCLUSIVE Cassette
----------------------------------------

Released: 1998.
Label: ELSINOR.
Artwork: Joe
Side A:
Tracks: 01. To Shunt Aside Cruikshank’s Crusade. \ 02. Thank You, Mr. Dictionary. \ 03. Screen Door. \ 04. Cordon Bleu the Nascent You. \ 05. Hats and Scarves. \ 06. Safe As The Scenery.
\- Side B: (an acoustic night at Pacer’s house) \ 01. Anacortes Type Writer. \ 02. Powerful Polarities. \ 03. Oatmeal, Son of Soapbox. \ 04. Linear Time. \ 05. The History of Art. \ 06. Bomb Squad.

\- Hiss Inclusive contains songs that were recorded to 4-track by Jay, Joe, Bart, and Ben in the Gladstone Street house. Jay had rented an accordion for a month and wanted to use it in a song, so he came up with the intro to Cordon Bleu. This was also the second occurrence of a Bart Hydra song. He had made his Appleseed Apart tape which we all loved, and so we begged and begged him to start making Hydra songs- and he lent Screen Door to the effort. Side two is a recording of Joe and Bart's acoustic night appearance at the Pacer house. We met Nathan for the first time that night, and would later recruit him into the band as our official tag-team drummer. The acoustic performance of Powerful Polarities is still an all time favorite.

Released: 1998.

Artwork: Joe
Tracks: 01. Der Blau Reiter. \ 02. Obnoxia Baba. \ 03. Powerful Polarities. \ 04. Multi-track Recording. \ 05. Surpreyes. \ 06. Romance About Fruit and Water. \ 07. The Forecast. \ 08. Linear Time. \ 09. Mason Hunts; Georgia Barks. \ 10. Cruel Oceanography. \ 11. Fingertip Haze. \ 12. Cocksucker’s Blues. \ 13. Oatmeal, Son of Sopebocks.

\- I remember setting up for a show at the 3B tavern one Friday night. We were loading in our gear when I heard a doppler-effected, familiar sound approaching down State Street. I looked up and saw Nathan driving up in his beat down Nissan truck, absolutely blasting Tidbits of Etcetera from his stereo. He slammed on his breaks, rolled down his window the rest of the way, and exclaimed that this was his favorite tape ever. Some time later, I was walking with the roommies to Casa Que Pasa for a potato burrito, and I heard that sound again, this time from the car of our friends Space and Danielle. They, also, rolled down their window and told us how much they loved the tape. Given that this was pre-internet explosion, these moments were the equivalent of Googling "Hydra" and seeing what radio stations are placing us on their play lists; there's nothing like real-time consumer report feedback to get the indierock blood flowing.

Released: 1998.
Label: ELSINOR.
Artwork: Allisyn/Ben
Tracks: Death Cab: 01. Your Bruise \ Revolutionary Hydra: 01. Linear Time. \ 02. Anacortes Type Writer. \ 03. Cruel Oceanography.

\- For this release we wanted to do three songs - one for each songwriter. All three songs, taken together or separately, are some of our best efforts. Plus, these were the first songs that we recorded with Chris at the Ellis St. Hall of Justice studio (if by studio you consider that the control room was Ben's room and the sound room was the kitchen or living room, depending on how much natural reverb Chris was going for. Cruel Oceanography is the first of many of Jay's nautical wartime themes, and Ben's amazing bassline mimics a melancholic crested wave effect to perfection. Linear time is Bart's lovelost yearn, declaring that "time won't compensate for inaction mistakes." And Anacortes Type Writer is a lyrical homage to our friend Phil, who had just started recording under the name Microphones: "I wish my sewing machine sounded like a type writer; I could be a Microphone." Long out of print, this slab of vinyl is an eBay junkie's dream.

PACER V. THE HYDRA Split Cassette
----------------------------------------

Released: 1997.
Label: ELSINOR.
Artwork: Craig
Tracks: 01. Oxygen = Death. \ 02. Self-Indulgent Birthday. \ 03. Jupiter’s Many Wives. \ 04. Professor 2nd Guesser. \ 05. The Ebb and Flow of the Civil War. \ 06. Charlie Lindbergh. \ 07. Relationship Pill. \ 08. Face That Launched 1000 Shits (Ben singing).

\- The Pacer side of this recording consists of Chris Walla- recorded sessions at the Ellis St. House. The Hydra side is an ill-fated attempt to simulate a live setting- recorded direct to stereo two-track, we just hit record and went with it. Most of the songs are available as proper recordings elsewhere, except for Ebb and Flow, which was recorded for the Ratcheting sessions but not used for some reason, and Jupiter’s Many Wives, which was a live-show staple but was never recorded properly. This experience convinced us that we definitely needed the Walla effect to help flesh out our sound; I mean, the vocals themselves are enough to send us into embarrassed fits of humility. The recording of Ben's performance of 1000 Shits was taken from one of the Pacer House acoustic nights, and this performance, much like their recording of it for Something About Airplanes, was a complete surprise to Jay, who wrote the song for the Left Handed Scissors Incident tape.

Wilson’s White Russians; Archangel.

\- After Virginia Creeper parted ways Joe and Jay threw together a tape of individually recorded material. (The song Our League Together was recorded live in the office of The Echo in Bellingham, and the clapping at the end is from Bart, who felt he need to be represented on the album as a full fledged contributor). We also mixed and sequenced this tape at the office, straight from the 4-track to a boom-box. Then we handed it out to our friends- the guys in 5 Gears in Reverse and Pacer, etc. A few weeks later, Trevor from Pacer used his work's (Pretzle shop at the mall) fax machine to send us a hand-scrawled note telling us how much he loved the tape. To this day, that is the best review we've ever received.

Tracks: 01. Jazz Mesopotamia. \ 02. Ice Cues. \ 03. Fling. \ 04. Hepzibah, if a Girl. \ 05. The Intellectual Head Nod.

\- This isn't a Hydra release per se, but it was the band that Joe and Jay were in previously to the Hydra. Bart joined the band a couple of months after this release came out, then we reformed as the Hydra shortly thereafter. The songs are very much what you would expect us to sound like at the time- lo-fi, vocally suspect, fuzzed out; especially Hepzibah which contains our first attempt at harnessing the awesome power of the Big Muff. Strangely enough, this single was positively reviewed in A.P. Magazine, and the people at Ptolemaic Terrascope really liked it. Go figure.

\- The Summer before Jay moved to Bellingham we recorded these 8 songs at the practice space we shared with Brian Willett. We were so excited about the tape that we started sending it out to all sorts of labels - Drag City, K, Merge, various Continental European labels. Pretty much any label we thought was cool at the time. Of course, our hubris was so great that we assumed they would all be bowled over by our brilliance and commence on a bidding war to sign us post haste, which of course never happened. While the recordings left something to be desired, the songs weren't half bad, particularly Confederacy, which was a yoke on John Kennedy Toole's book.

\- BARTON SHARP, guitarist supreme and founding member, has been the one single static element in the Hydra- you could always assume you would see him standing tall on stage, feet close together, red guitar slung angularly, playing some of the best lines you've ever heard. His songwriting style consistently caused the others to strive to step it up a notch. "Bomb Squad", Bart's seminal song from THE SWISS ADMIRAL, is a long time fan favorite. NATHAN GOOD
----------------------------------------

\- NATHAN GOOD, was always called upon when we needed his particular style of drumming, which got more and more repeated as the years went on. Nathan has the awesome ability to listen to a song once and then lay down the best drum track you could imagine. He has the energy of a six pack of Jolt cola, and is an absolute pleasure to have as a friend. Nathan has since moved to the outskirts of Oakland with his lovely wife, Valerie, and is pursuing a non-musical career in PR.

BEN GIBBARD
----------------------------------------

\- BEN GIBBARD, the original Hydra bassist, was instrumental in motivating the nascent Hydra to accelerate into an object in motion rather than, as is its nature, an unmovable mass. Of course, the obligation of being an indie-rock star (see DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE | POSTAL SERVICE) severed Ben's ability to regularly contribute to the Hydra; he hasn't been able to join the band onstage since the release party for The Antiphony. Nevertheless, Ben remains a lifetime member and friend.

RYIN KOBZA
----------------------------------------

\- RYIN KOBZA, a fellow from the Bellingham community, approached with the notion of handling our graphic needs. Once we saw his style (militaristic/art nouveau/antique books- was this guy born for the Hydra or what!?), we knew that we had struck duo-tone gold. His work on our releases have as much to do with the music as do the songs themselves; Ryin can get inside a theme and translate it to a beautiful rendering (usually with only two colors!). His work can also be found on several albums and posters. In fact, his poster for Sunset Valley's ICEPOND record was used as a prop in School of Rock. How's that for cred?!

ANTON FILIGREE
----------------------------------------

\- ANTON FILIGREE, while not able to carry a tune if it were given to him in a knapsack, is an integral part of the Hydra mythology. Without Anton to parse the legal documents, the Hydra would never have been able to cross into Canada, avoid our taxes, or refuse offers from all the major record labels. He can currently be found publishing a JOURNAL from the curtained halls of Elsinor HQ.

\- http://www.revolutionaryhydra.com was designed and subsequently staged by ELSINOR on a 15" 1GHz Powerbook G4. Macromedia Fireworks MX was used to splice up the background (which was itself pulled from a design by the very talented RYIN KOBZA), then BBEdit 6.5.3 was tapped to code it all together. The pages and graphics take up 244KB of memory.
